Small Cute Things ― Hina Decorations and Gosho Dolls

In Japan, there has long been a tradition of cherishing "small things" as adorable and endearing. In *The Pillow Book*, Sei Shonagon wrote, “All small things are charming,” and expressed her admiration for the small leaves of an aoi plant, the sight of young children toddling around in short robes, and miniature furnishings for dolls, referring to them as “utsukushiki mono” (lovely things). During the Edo period, the Shogunate's sumptuary laws led to the production of many small yet exquisitely crafted *hina* dolls and decorations, which became objects of affection and admiration.

This exhibition focuses on such "small things," showcasing charming and diminutive works that have been cherished for generations in the Shimose family, including *hina* dolls, decorations, and *gosho* dolls that form the foundation of our collection. Highlights include *kai-awase* shell-matching games featuring finely detailed *Genji-e* paintings depicting scenes from all 54 chapters of *The Tale of Genji*, elaborately decorated sewing and cosmetic tools, and *gosho* dolls with innocent, childlike expressions. Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of “small and beautiful things.”
